The Service

Professional in - Process Details

Petrol engines cannot ignite heavy diesel fuel properly. If you've put diesel in a petrol car, the engine will start to misfire heavily as the spark plugs become coated in oily diesel soot. The car will likely judder violently, lose power, and produce excessive smoke from the exhaust before eventually cutting out entirely.

The biggest risk is to your catalytic converter. Unburnt diesel pushed into the exhaust system can coat the catalyst monolith, rendering it useless and requiring an expensive replacement (often over £1,000). If you experience these symptoms after filling up, switch off the ignition immediately. A professional drain and flush can clean the system and prevent catalyst damage.

FAQs

Common Questions

How is it possible to put diesel in a petrol car?expand_more
While a diesel nozzle is physically larger than a standard petrol filler neck, it is still possible to misfuel if using a jerry can, if the filler neck is worn, or if dealing with older vehicles or motorcycles. It is rarer than petrol-in-diesel, but we see it regularly.
Can I just top it up with petrol to dilute it?expand_more
Absolutely not. Diesel does not dilute easily in petrol — it is much heavier and oilier. Attempting to run a diluted mix will still cause heavy misfiring, soot buildup on spark plugs, and can permanently damage oxygen sensors and the catalytic converter. A full drain is essential.
Will my spark plugs need replacing?expand_more
Usually no. If you stopped quickly, the oily soot on the spark plugs will burn off once the system is flushed and correct petrol is introduced. In extreme cases of prolonged driving on diesel, our technicians can clean the spark plugs on-site to get you running again.
What happens to the catalytic converter?expand_more
Unburnt diesel passes into the exhaust system and coats the precious metals inside the catalytic converter, stopping it from filtering emissions. If you stop the engine quickly and have the system drained, the catalyst will usually recover as normal exhaust temperatures eventually burn off the residue.
Will my car start immediately after the drain?expand_more
Yes. After we drain the contaminated fuel and flush the lines, we prime the system with fresh petrol. It may take a few extra cranks to start, and there might be some residual smoke for a few minutes as the remaining diesel in the exhaust burns off, but it will quickly return to normal.
